April 3, 1938: DuPont Develops Teflon

This day in 1938, tetrafluoroethylene—better known as Teflon—was developed by Roy Plunkett of the DuPont Company.

Unless you're old-school and use a cast-iron skillet, you'll probably cook your breakfast on a non-stick surface created 74 years ago today.

Roy Plunkett of the DuPont Company developed tetrafluoroethylene, the chemical used to coat most modern frying pans, in 1938.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the material is also used in the production of semiconductors, communications cables and clothing. I wouldn't try to fry your spinach omelet on any of those if I were you.
