Mount St. Mary's College
12001 Chalon Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90049

A Catholic college primarily for women, this is an old-fashioned idea to some and a proven tradition toMore others.

At Mount St. Mary's, they point to a U.S. Department of Education report that says,"There is evidence that when private 4-year women's colleges were compared with all private 4-year institutions…they conferred upon women equal or larger proportions of bachelor's degrees in traditionally male-dominated fields than the norm for private 4-year colleges."

Above the Getty Center on a 1,000-foot ridge, the campus is home to a diverse student body. Nearly 60% of the entering freshman class are first-generation college students. Three quarters of the student body is made up of minority students, while women make up nearly 95% of first-year undergraduate students.

A striking white chapel overlooks the 56-acre liberal arts campus which includes housing for students. The college encourages dorm living "to facilitate close personal relationships between students of many cultural backgrounds and experiences such that we foster the formation of personal values and integrity."

It all works. The school has been consistently top-rated and its alumni have moved on to top graduate schools and professional positions.
