Am I the only one who has a problem with the statement that "celebrating Easter is aRead More tradition that predates Christianity"? If Easter itself is the celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus, how could the celebration "predate Christianity"? For the record, there is no word in the Bible which translates as "Easter" - nor is there any record that early Christians observed such a holiday. The word is an anglicization of the ancient name of the Pagan Goddess of fertility "Ishtar" ("Astarte" in the Greek). This goddess was venerated each year by celebrations of the fertility inherent in Spring, and symbolized with fertility icons such as eggs and rabbits. Since the central tenet of Biblical Judeo-Christianity is the repudiation of Paganism and its multiple deities - the proclamation that there is only one God - it is, at the very least, antithetical to give to the remembrance of its chief character the name of one of the deities of Paganism - wouldn't you say?

The best way to boil eggs for taste and minimal to zero cracks/fractures: 1) bring eggs to roomRead More temperature 2) bring a large pot of salted water to boil 3) when water boils, turn off heat and lower eggs into water (a hand held mesh strainer is great) 4) put tight fitting lid on pot 5) set timer for 17 minutes **a cast iron pot is great because it will hold the heat for longer

Los Angeles is facing years of budget deficits, says an analyst. Patch file photo.

They gloss over it and don't give you the pragmatic, dig the grave numbers up front. Those are, aRead More $30 billion dollar pension fund under-funding as a result of the politicians giving your money away to public sector employees who don't "give a sh*&" about you. Now it your turn to take it back and say no. Bankruptcy takes the hemming and hawing away from the politicians who have no real incentive to manage your money in the fiduciary responsibility they are supposed too. Yes, bankruptcy and we stop the bleeding and you get your city back

Don, I have advocated just that and been whispering it into Wendy Gruel's ear before she even becameRead More controller. It was a problem way back then. Should have done it back a few years and the city would be on the way to recovery. You know this is going to be a prelude to the raising of taxes or maybe raising parking to 5.00 an hour.

I own a small business in Woodridge IL. The amount of credit card fraud has here has increased tenRead More fold over last year. I have to tell you that the card owner doesn't get burned, the card issuer don't either, nor does the company you hire to process and approve the cards. It's the local merchant where the card was used. Online ordering is the worst. The big banks say you didn't swipe a card, so you're liable, even though it was approved by that same bank at the time of purchase. If this keeps up, I'll have to go backwards in time and shut down online ordering. So much for a cashless society.

I think I will go back to using checks at stores and cash at gas stations. I found a gas station inRead More Eagle Rock that gives a discount for using cash and generally buy my gas there. Not as convenient as using a debit card but I had to cancel my card after using it at Target right before Christmas. What a hassle.

I fail to see what this guy's race or politicial affiliation has to do with what he did. He looksRead More white to me (so the "third-world" comment doesn't make sense), and the "Obozocare" comment is absolutely ridiculous. You can blame the video games, but this guy had an underlying reason for what he did. You have to have a lot of patience to deal with a baby. They cry. They screw up your life if you really haven't grown up. I was appalled that he is being charged with third-degree murder, but I don't think he meant to kill his son. He just wasn't mature enough to be a father.

Well pam that is where i was getting with my comment. Time people grow the hell up! There is noRead More reason a 24 yr old MAN should be too immature to raise a baby. Start teaching these young adults to be young adults, not 2 yr old babies. In high school is where it can start.

It is interesting how juries' decisions which greatly favor corporate defendants are not overriddenRead More by the courts and the courts do not issue Additurs. What the public does not realize that judges have the power to decimate a jury's decision and substitute their own whim or help their own buddies in the defense bar by issuing a Remittiturs, Judgments Notwithstanding the Verdict, or a new trial to drive up plaintiff's costs. Remittitur is Latin meaning the judge may reduce the award made by the jury if the judge favors the corporate defendant. Additur is Latin meaning the judge may increase the jury's award if the judge thinks the plaintiff's injuries merit more compensation. I've seen lots of Remittiturs, especially if the plaintiffs are minorities, but I have yet to see an actual Additur where the judge makes a corporation pay more. I assume there are some somewhere, but in 40 years, I've never seen one or know anyone who got an Additur. Judgment Notwithstanding the Judgment means that the judge completely overrules the jury. We saw this with Judge Connor at the downtown criminal courts when she reversed the jury verdict which convicted some of the cops in Ramparts Scandal. The scandal had resulted in the LAPD's operating under a Consent Decree with the US Justice Department for a decade. So we are to believe that the US Dept of Justice, the Christopher Commission that investigated the Ramparts Division, and the jury were all wrong, but Judge Connor, who had ties to officers involved in the Ramparts Scandals was right to issue her Judgment Notwithstanding the Verdict. So, Judge Marmaro thinks that he knows better than the jury. How many Additurs has Judge Marmaro issued? To have context for Judge Marmaro' extrasensory perception of the "truth," we need to know how often he discerns the need to increase the compensation to any injured party. Maybe Marmaro is the exception who overrides his juries to increase and decrease jury awards. If so, why have juries?

California unemployment up .1 pct as reported today. Let them move and if the pepper supplierRead More doesn't survive so be it. Harsh yes!! Remember that this company is now under the control of the regulators of the AMQD and guess what they are a power unto themselves. CA is bleeding business. But hey, you elect who you do, you are required to suffer the consequences. So if the workers voted for the folks now in Sacramento, then they are also part of the problem. Yep, it will hurt them a lot more than the owner moving.
Don April 18, 2014 at 10:34 am
@Debbie, mostly assumptions. The pepper supplier the job loss is 50 minimum wage line jobs. I'dRead More also check their legal status, then you'll know if he took jobs from legal residents I'm not being crass both sides decided to arrogantly say "mine's bigger". Now that they've exposed themselves both sides want us to feel sorry for them. Let the cards fall the way they fall and then insist that the lesson be implemented for future issues. If you really want to have empathy, why don't you evaluate the overall plans of the various City governments that pick and choose the winners by tax abatements. Then have empathy for that group that is currently not part of the chosen few.

There are implements that could be attached in the plant that would have prevented the discomfortRead More and possible injury to others. joebanana April 18, 2014 at 12:01 pm
mimi- I highly doubt this is the first death by being kicked by "police". Police are aRead More bigger danger to the public than criminals are. At least criminals have a REASON for killing the people they do. Cops regularly murder unarmed citizens, and are NEVER held accountable. Best "news story" I've ever heard was recently, a stupid cop draws his gun to shoot someones family pet and shot his own stupid self. This is what we run lose on our streets?

This must be why the city stopped allowing Hollywood Tour busses to go up to the sign via LakeRead More Hollywood Dr & Mulholand. Those are all independent companies. Now the city gets the $$$. Interestingly though, the city said the reason they banned the busses, which are actually just vans, was because of weight restrictions on those roads. These streets have 6000lbs limits.
