Archer School for Girls

Maybe you didn't notice when it stopped being the Eastern Star Home for Women -- that 1931 Spanish Revival casa grande on Sunset that was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989.

That's OK. It looks exactly the same, but the beautiful structure now houses the Archer School for Girls, started in 1995 by three mothers who couldn't find a school they liked for their daughters.

This all-girl institution "provides more than a traditional, girl-centric learning environment. [It]... equally prepares young women for leadership in our ever-emerging global world."

Offering grades six through 12 and enrolling around 450 students, 31% are "students of color." Students come from 138 elementary and secondary schools and from 71 Los Angeles zip codes. Over $2.5 million in tuition assistance is awarded annually.

True to founders' vision, Archer says it remains "intentional in its practice of teaching girls the way they learn best."
