Weekend Things: African Dance, Music; Art-at-Work; Archeological Findings

Here are five interesting events taking place this weekend in Brentwood.

Family Amphitheater Performances 2012: Dafra

Enjoy West African dance and music by Dafra at the Skirball Cultural Center, as part of the Family Amphitheater Performances 2012. This is a fun, exciting event for the whole family to enjoy. Dafra will perform on Saturday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. and the event is included with regular museum admission.

Saturdays Off the 405: Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang

Come to the Getty Center and immerse yourself in Bubu, a style of dance music that is characterized by a frantic pace and rhythms by Janka Nabay. Also, enjoy music by the Bubu Gang and DJ Tom Chasteen, as part of the Saturdays Off the 405. This event is on Saturday at 6 p.m. and is free and open to all.

Nora Zelevansky Discusses and Signs "Semi-Charmed Life" at Diesel Bookstore

Author Nora Zelevansky will be at Diesel, A Bookstore to discuss and sign her debut novel, “Semi-Charmed Life,” on Sunday at 3 p.m. For more information on Zelevansky’s novel, click here.

Artist-at-Work Demonstration: Early Photography and the Landscape

Photographer Luther Gerlach will demonstrate a variety of authentic 19th century cameras, lenses, and other equipment used to capture landscapes; including the camera Lucida and camera Obscura. This is a free, drop-in program at the Getty Center and complements the exhibition In Focus: Picturing Landscape. There will be two classes to attend on Sunday. First, Historic Equipment, which is from 1-2 p.m. Second, Techniques Interactive Camera Lucida and Camera Obscura, which is from 2-3 p.m.

Dig It! Archaeology Adventures

Bring the family during regular museum hours to the Skirball Cultural Center and experience the simulated outdoor archaeological dig and field laboratory. Everyone can enjoy archaeology by sifting and sorting through sand to find hidden ancient artifacts, then weighing and examining the findings and analyzing the clues. Participants will work with an archaeology staff to piece together the puzzles of the past. Everyone is welcome to join and children must be accompanied by an adult. This event is included with regular museum admission.
