Winning Boys Basketball Season Ends in Sad Loss for Uni

The Wildcats fall to Gahr 89-65 in the first round of the regional playoffs.

The winningest season in Uni hoops history ended Tuesday night when the University High boys' basketball team was creamed  89-65 in the opening chapter of the state championships.

Gahr High School of Cerritos knocked the Wildcats out of the running in the first round of the Southern California Regional playoffs.

Despite playing in the Western League, one of the toughest in the entire state, the Wildcats managed to rack up 25 victories and reached the City Section Division II final for the fourth consecutive year under coach Steve Ackerman.

Fourth-seeded Gahr, the San Gabriel Valley league runner-up, was led by top scorer David Potts. The Gladiators advanced to the regional quarterfinals for a rematch with Lakewood Mayfair. Gahr beat the Monsoons (26-6) in the section final last Saturday at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Since back-to-back losing seasons in 2004-05 and 2005-06, Ackerman's squads have won 21, 22, 24, 19 and 25 games, respectively. Nwaba, a senior guard, will get consideration for City Player of the Year honors after averaging 22.3 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 2.9 blocks per game this season for a squad that finished third in the Western League at 7-4.
