Uni Hoops Falls in Regional Playoffs

The Lady Wildcats lose to Oak Park, 43-39, in the state tournament.

The Cinderella season has finally come to an end for the University High School girls basketball team, but not before the host Wildcats staged a furious fourth-quarter rally against Oak Park in the opening round of the Southern California Regional Division III playoffs.

Still basking in the glow of their first-ever Los Angeles City Section title, which they captured Saturday by defeating Marshall 62-46 at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Wildcats opened the state tournament against a team equally determined after being upset by Bishop Amat in the Southern Section Division 3A finals.

University started slowly and trailed 16-6 after the first quarter. The home team rallied in the second quarter but found itself trailing 26-14 at halftime. Oak Park outscored the Wildcats 10-8 in the third quarter to open a 36-22 lead, but after a pep talk from head coach Jim Nakabara, the Wildcats went on a tear over the final eight minutes. Despite outscoring the Eagles 17-7 in the fourth quarter, though, University fell 43-39 and finished the season with 17 victories and 10 defeats.
