Uni Boys Hoops Nets No. 1 Seed

The Wildcats top the Division II draw but will be on the road in the first round.

Getting the No. 1 seed for the City Section Division II boys basketball playoffs was no big surprise to head coach . Having to open the postseason on the road, however, was shocking to say the least.

The Wildcats (22-8) will travel to Los Feliz on Thursday to face No. 16 Marshall (12-9), which will host the game by virtue of having won the Northern League.

"It's not a perfect system--there are flaws in the selection process," Ackerman said during Saturday morning's seeding meeting. "The rule is that league champions are guaranteed a first-round home game, regardless of where they're seeded. It's strange that we should have to play on the road given that we're the No. 1 seed but that's the way it worked out."

If it takes care of the Barristers on Thursday night, University, which has played in the last three Division II finals and won the title in 2008, would host either No. 9 Bell (12-10) or No. 8 West Adams (15-11) the quarterfinals Feb. 22. University was third in the Western League, which is considered the toughest in the City.

"Playing in  a strong league like we do has a lot of advantages," Ackerman said. "In this case, however, it worked against us. We've played enough big road games to know what to expect..."

Boys Soccer

After finishing second by half a game to Palisades in the Western League, the Wildcats were awarded the 10th seed in the 32-team Large Schools playoffs. University (12-4-3) will host No. 23 San Pedro (8-11-1), the fourth-place team from the Marine League, in the opening round of the single-elimination draw Wednesday at 3 p.m. If victorious, the Wildcats would either host No. 26 Huntington Park (12-6-3) or travel to No. 7 Locke (18-2-5) in the second round Friday.
