Brentwood School Tennis in Contention for Griggs Cup

The Eagles are in contention for the coveted team trophy at the annual Ojai Tournament.

The 111th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament got underway on Thursday in Ventura County and is still in contention for one of the event's most coveted trophies.

The Griggs Cup is awarded to the high school team that finishes with the most combined wins in singles and doubles and the Eagles went four-for-four on the first day.

has moved into the round of 16 in the CIF singles division after his pair of victories Thursday. He recovered to beat Jake Douglas of Palos Verdes, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, in his first match, then made short work of Santa Barbara's Devin Barber, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round.

Pura will take on Jack McCullers of Mission Hills in the round of 16 Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Thacher School.   

In the CIF doubles division, the Eagles' tandem of and beat Palisades' Max Licona and Spencer Pekar, 6-4, 7-5, in the first round, then knocked off Chetan Munugala and Philip Xiao of Fullerton Troy in the afternoon at Thacher.

Brentwood's duo will meet Donnie Howren and Ryan Mariano of San Clemente in the round of 16 Friday at 11 a.m. at Thacher.

In the Pacific 10 men's Invitational singles division, Stanford sophomore  prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 16 against California's Katsarov Bozhidar. He will take on Matt Stith of Washington on Friday at noon at Libbey Park South.

Kehrer, who led Brentwood to three CIF titles in his four years on varsity, is also vying for a repeat in the . He and partner Daniel Ho got a quarterfinal bye and will play Cal's Bozhidar and Riki McLachlan in the semifinals Saturday at 2 p.m. at Libbey Park South.
