Archer Squads Are Playoff Bound

The Panthers' basketball and soccer teams could make noise in the playoffs.

It's been a magical season for the winter sports programs at the for Girls and it's not over yet. In fact, it may go on quite a while longer.

For the first time in school history, the varsity soccer and basketball teams have qualified for the CIF playoffs in the same season.

Guided by first-year head coach Kim Smith, the soccer team finished the regular season 12-6 overall and 5-3 in the Delphic League. By finishing in second place in league the Panthers earned a berth in the Southern Section Division 7 playoffs.

Archer should get a strong seed given that league champion Sierra Canyon is the No. 4-ranked team in the division and Archer defeated seventh-ranked Milken Community early in the season. The playoffs begin Tuesday, February 15.

The basketball team is also enjoying an impressive season under head coach Kristen Benjamin. The Panthers are 16-7 overall and finished second in the Delphic League at 7-3. On Tuesday, they upset Lancaster Paraclete at Santa Monica College--the Spirits' only league loss this season.

The Panthers have been ranked as high as No. 5 this season in various polls after winning the Buckley holiday Classic and finishing second at the Avalon Classic. Archer is 6-3 against teams in higher divisions, including a victory over Venice of the City Section. The Panthers will open the Southern Section Division 5A playoffs next Thursday, Feb. 17.

Should either or both teams host first-round games, they will likely be played at Santa Monica College. The CIF web site (www.cifss.org) will release the pairings for basketball Sunday afternoon and the soccer pairings on Monday afternoon.
