Archer Girls Varsity Basketball Clinches League Championship

Brentwood's Archer School for Girls won the school's first ever league basketball championship with a 49-36 victory over Lancaster's Paraclete High School.

It was a night to remember at Santa Monica College (SMC) Tuesday, as the Archer School for Girls (Brentwood) clinched the school's first ever league basketball championship with a 49-36 victory over Paraclete High School (Lancaster).

Paraclete, who won the Delphic league title last year, fell to 5-4 in league play.  Leslie Baker (two time Delphic All-League) and Coco Maurice (2011 All-CIF and Delphic League MVP) were honored in a pre-game ceremony on "senior night."

The two seniors have combined on Archer basketball teams that have complied a 46-23 record over the past three seasons.  Both were also key players for the Archer volleyball team that went 16-5 and advanced to the CIF semifinals.  The Archer team was also joined on the bench by "honorary coach" Elizabeth English, the Archer School for Girls Head of School.

Archer, now 8-0 in league play and 16-7 overall, will play CAMS (Carson) at SMC Wednesday night at 7 p.m.  A win over CAMS (2-6 in league) would give the team an outright championship.  Crossroads School (Santa Monica) is 6-2 in league and can share the championship with Archer only if they win two and Archer loses their final two games.  Archer went 18-8 last season and advanced to the CIF quarterfinals.

Based on the success of 2011, the team has played an ambitious schedule against bigger schools this year, competing in the Inglewood City of Champions Tournament and in the Bay Area at the West Coast Jamboree.

The Archer girls, currently ranked #14 in the CIF 4A division, can not only win the league outright this week but can tie the school record for wins with victories Wednesday night and Thursday at Marshall High School in Pasadena.  The CIF playoffs start on Feb. 16th.  The CIF will announce the pairings through its website ( http://cifss.org/ ) on Feb. 13.
