Brentwood Court Crosswalk Adventures

Normally my posts have been about Situational Awareness.  But I wanted to comment on something that I have observed that represents a tragedy waiting to happen.  At the intersection of Barrington Court, just south of Sunset is the Starbucks, a Pharmacy, Bellwood, and several other popular shops and restaurants.  There are two parking circles.  You all know the area, there are also two schools, Archer School for Girls and Brentwood School.  This is a popular stop for many people throughout the day.  The crosswalk that goes between the Starbucks and the Pharmacy is a daily adventure.  I have observed countless people throw their arms up in frustration at the careless and irresponsible drivers who fail, often never attempt, to stop for the pedestrians in the crosswalk.  The crosswalk and intersection is clear and without obstructions.  While it is certainly true that an occasional pedestrian will seemingly suddenly step out into the street to cross, generally this is not the problem.  I have sat at the Starbucks and watched driver after driver cause pedestrians to curse, throw their arms up in disgust or in some cases jump out of the way of the passing cars.

The police are aware, I know because I complained about it myself.  They sent a motor unit on a couple of occasions, perhaps twice.  But because no one has died, the police moved on to other concerns.  I am not blaming the police.  They are not the ones committing the violations.  But I am pointing the finger at my community of Brentwood and those others driving through who don't have time to take care and give the right of way to children, old people and the general public using the crosswalk.

When the time comes, and someone is hurt, everyone will wonder why no one said anything and why nothing was done to lessen the danger.

Perhaps it is not important to most people.

I will get off the pulpit and go back to my Situational Awareness blogs very soon, have you read them?
