(Video) Artist Frank Romero Exhibits Work at the Brentwood Archer School

Known for his vibrant political paintings, Romero gave a talk at the student-run art gallery on Saturday.

The hosted an art exhibit featuring paintings by and a discussion with artist Frank Romero on Saturday.

Probably one of Romero's more famous paintings is "Death of Rubén Salazar," which depicted the death of a Hispanic Los Angeles Times reporter during a Chicano rally against the Vietnam War in 1970.

Police fired a tear gas canister at protesters, which struck Salazar and killed him.

"If Salazar wasn't a reporter for the L.A. Times, no one probably would have ever known he was killed," Romero told Patch.

Several students ushered guests through the small gallery, explaining each of the paintings.

"Our students curate the shows, they manage the money, they act as docents, they organize the lectures and it's one of our experiential education programs," said Elizabeth English, the school's principal.

Romero uses vivid colors to draw attention to his political paintings, which is one of the things student docent and Archer junior Nastasya Popov likes about his work.

"I think [he's] a really great artist to show at a school because not only is there the beauty of the art but there's a message that the artist is bringing," Popov said.
