University High School Opens New Music Complex

Amidst seemingly endless cuts and setbacks in public education, school officials at nearby University High School in West Los Angeles say it’s easy to overlook the work that has been quietly underway to revamp its instruction and facilities.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Wednesday, May 22 on the campus to celebrate the opening of the new gym, six new tennis courts, parent center and the new Magruder Music Complex, which houses a new fully-equipped recording studio as well as a 32–station digital keyboard lab.

There, students can undertake a course of studies preparing them for entry into career paths in the music and professional audio industries.

According to University High's Music Instructor Art Shane, the new facility makes possible the rollout of the new class elective sequence where students will learn music fundamentals, contemporary music technology and engineer and produce recordings of Uni High Soloists and ensembles, soundtracks for student films and animations.

“Music making is among the things that best demostrate the high qualities of human potential," he said.

Planning is also underway to invite local feeder schools to visit the Uni campus for recordings sessions engineered and mastered by Uni High music students.
