Keeping Up with the Los Angeles Art Scene

Bolstered by excellent art schools and scores of commercial galleries devoted to displaying the works of local artists, the Los Angeles art world continues to grow, evolve, and attract working artists as an ideal place to work. Students in this class will visit galleries and artists' studios to learn more about the current trends in the art world specific to Southern California. Students will visit working artists Lita Albuquerque, Karen Koblitz, andJessica Shokrian as well as several galleries downtown, in Venice, and in Santa Monica. All sessions will meet off-site.
Prior to each meeting, students will receive details on the artists' backgrounds, driving directions, parking tips, and suggestions for area restaurants. Carpooling is recommended.

Instructor: Barbara Gilbert, PhD, senior curator emerita of fine arts at the Skirball Cultural Center, has organized major exhibitions on artists Max Liebermann, Henry Mosler, Larry Rivers, and George Segal. Gilbert has a doctorate in art history from USC and frequently judges art exhibitions.
