Brentwood School Hosts First S.T.E.A.M. Day

Presenters engage students and families in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and math with interesting and interactive projects.

More than 400 students and their families came to Brentwood School Saturday, March 9 to explore more than 40 different drop-in activities and eight tinkershops for its first ever S.T.E.A.M. Day.

Activities led by community members such as teachers, parents, students and special guests engaged students from kindergarten through eighth grade and displayed their work in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and math. Some of the special guests included:

  • "Super Awesome Sylvia," the 11-year old maker of cool things and host to over one million viewers of her “Super Awesome Maker Show.” Sylvia taught STEAM Day visitors how to make a portable cell phone charger.
  • Caine Monroy, famous for the viral video phenomenon “Caine’s Arcade,” led a demonstration of how to make your own cardboard creations. After being posted, “Caine’s Arcade” launched a global wave of cardboard creativity in kids around the world.
  • Instructors from ScubaHaus in Santa Monica offered an interactive demonstration in the Caruso Watt Aquatics Center pool on the world of underwater journeys.
  • Scott Passaglia did a demonstration of sound and physics with "Long Strings," an instrument similar to the "Earth Harp" that was invented by William Close and performed by him on America's Got Talent.

Other highlights included: 3D printing workshop, “The Secrets of a Composting Jar Revealed,” “Soccer and Geometry: Using Math to Score,” mousetrap car races, stop-motion animation, LEGO mindstorms, eyes on the solar system, and paper engineering with Pop-Ups, plus many, many more.
