Back to School Tips for any Student in Brentwood

Ali Galedary of University High School offers useful tips for parents and students to follow as the start of school approaches.

“Back to school” is perhaps one of the most dreaded phrases in the entire English language lexicon for any individual under the age of 18. However, going back to school means reconnecting with old buddies, meeting new pals, enjoying all that comes with football season and even a few social events sprinkled in between.

To make the most of the school year, starting off on the right foot is crucial. The Assistant Principal at Brentwood’s University High School, Ali Galedary, offers Patch readers insight as to how each student can prepare best for the upcoming school year.

1. Bring school supplies on the first day, but prepare to make a second trip:

Students should come to school well rested and prepared to work on day one. Teachers are always impressed by students who come to class with at least a notebook/binder, pens, pencils, highlighters, rulers - basic supplies. However, parents should not overdo it with school supplies as teachers might require additional equipment based on the requirements of the particular class. In other words, it's usually necessary to make a follow-up trip to the store to purchase school supplies.

2. Familiarize yourself with your school’s dress code:

Be aware of the school's dress code policy. The information is usually available in the enrollment packet and on the school website. Some schools do not require uniforms but do not permit certain clothing items.

3. Attend orientation:

Whether the student is new or not, be sure to attend the orientation program that most schools offer prior to the first day of classes. At Uni, our new student orientation is on Thursday, September 1 at 6 p.m. It's a great opportunity to become acquainted with the major players at the school site and learn about what the school has to offer its students.

4. Know important calendar dates:

Be sure to check the school calendar, which should be in the enrollment packet or on the school website, for important dates, such as "Back To School Night," holidays, vacation breaks, parent conference nights, "Open House," important athletic events, senior prom and graduation, to name a few.

5. Get Immunized:

This year, all students will be required to show proof that they have been immunized for Whooping Cough (TDAP). Vaccinations are available at all public health facilities, pharmacies, hospitals and doctors' offices.

6. Plan transportation in advance:

If your child plans to ride the bus, be sure to get bus schedule information from the bus line's website. For the Westside, you can find the websites under Big Blue Bus, Culver City Municipal or MTA Los Angeles. The websites will also provide information on how to get student discounts.

7. Be advised of parking/loading zone regulations:

If you plan to drop your child off at school, be aware of parking/stopping restrictions that are posted around all schools. For example, dropping off your child in a bus zone could result in a very expensive parking citation. LA Parking Enforcement is very active around schools, especially during the first two weeks of classes, both before and after school.

8. Always read!

Students who kept busy reading during the summer are already many steps ahead of those who chose not to. Although students will be given reading assignments from their teachers, it's always advantageous to set aside time for pleasure reading.
