Rosendahl Honors "Carmageddon" Cyclists

Councilmember Bill Rosendahl handed out certificates of recognition to the 18 cyclists that beat a JetBlue passenger plane in a race from Burbank to Long Beach during the July 16-18 shutdown of the 405 Freeway.

On the weekend of, a 10-mile stretch of the 405 Freeway was closed on the Westside so that part of the Mulholland Bridge could be demolished.

Dubbed the “Carmageddon” weekend for the potential traffic hazard it was feared would be created (that never eventuated), JetBlue airlines offered $4 flights from Burbank to Long Beach.

Following JetBlue’s announcement, a group of cyclists known as Wolfpack Hustle, challenged one of the flights in a race dubbed Flight vs Bike, which was broadcast in real time on the Internet. The 18 cyclists handily beat the jet in one hour and 34 minutes.

On Friday, City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, who chairs the Transportation Committee, honored each of the cyclists with a Certificate of Recognition at City Hall.

The Transportation Committee has worked hard to improve the city’s bike plan; created a first of its kind cyclist anti-harassment ordinance and established new bicycle parking standards.

Handing out the certificates on Friday morning Rosendahl said,

“I would like to applaud the efforts of the local cycling community in the Flight vs Bike challenge. Team Wolfpack Hustle proved to an international audience that bikes are a truly viable mode of transportation in the City of Los Angeles."
