Monrovia's Municipal Elections Could Be Canceled

Only two candidates filed to run for two open positions on the City Council and the mayor is running unopposed so the city could decide to cancel April's elections.

The City Council will decide in a special meeting next week whether to cancel municipal elections after only two candidates filed to run for two open council seats.

Mayor Mary Ann Lutz, City Clerk Alice Atkins and City Treasurer Stephen Baker are all running unopposed, meaning voters would have nothing to decide in April if elections go on as planned. Interim Councilman Larry Spicer and local attorney Alexander Blackburn filed to run for the council seats, according to city records.

Atkins told Patch that a special council meeting will be held next Thursday to decide what to do next.

"One of the options in the government code is to appoint the offices and cancel the election," Atkins said. "But there is an option to go ahead and hold the election as well."

City Councilman Clarence Shaw said earlier this week that he planned to run for re-election but did not file nomination papers by the deadline Wednesday, records show. He did not immediately return a message seeking comment on this story.

Doesn't matter who the comments are from Dan, they are valid! I would like to second Gayle Montgomery's comment about holding the Election, to give Write-Ins the possibility of running...........especially since there appears to being some 'rigging' or the suspicion of it with this election already!

Who are you, Dan Crandell, time to stop hiding behind your stupid handle. Most posters here know who I am. Have you registered to vote yet? The last time I checked you were not registered to vote, Loren was but not you or are you, you. Give me a call and we'll talk 626-422-5241

Usually when I write something here I do so to the general audience. Haven't replied to one person until now. Just did a search of the Municipal Code and couldn't find anything regarding write in candidates. Perhaps the state election code covers this. I agree with Gayle above that an election is needed. Plan to attend the special Council meeting this week. Perhaps we'll meet.
