Mixed Feelings Continue With the Bundy/Mayfield Stop Signs

Brentwood Community Council hears that DOT will take another look at the reasoning to install the four all-way stop signs at the busy intersection, but plan on waiting for an update.

Mixed feelings about Brentwood's four recently installed all-way stop signs at the intersection of Bundy Drive and Mayfield Avenue came before the community council Tuesday night, March 5.

Joaquin Macias, field deputy for City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, said they have received a number of complaints about traffic being backed up to Wilshire Boulevard and almost to Montana Avenue to the north. However, Rosendahl's office has also received a "number of emails" from thankful people who live nearby.

A Feb. 20 Patch poll about the new stop signs showed mixed results as well, including in the comments.

"DOT is looking at the initial study to put in the stop signs," Macias said, noting that it's difficult to have stop signs removed once they've been installed due to safety concerns. If they are removed and an accident happens, the city is then held liable, he said.

Macias added that he's awaiting a car count report about Bundy and Mayfield.

"It took seven months from when they were approved to be installed," he added. "I don’t forsee anything coming down in next couple of months."

DOT has classified Bundy Drive as a "collector street" and Mayfield Avenue as a "local street." However, a recent argument brought forward in late February actually classifies Bundy Drive as a "secondary highway."

"We are dealing with a real problem here beyond Mayfield and Bundy," said member Ike Cohen. "We need to somehow connect BCC directly to DOT and ask us questions."

Member Marylin Krell, who also serves on the San Vicente Scenic Corridor Design Review Board, added she continues to receive feedback about the intersection. In a Feb. 21 email, Krell said she received 31 comments in favor of the stop signs, 42 opposed and 12 with mixed feelings.
