L.A. Mayor Signs Letters Seeking Stronger Gun Control

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa joined the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the Mayors Against Illegal Guns in asking President Obama and Congress to make it harder for dangerous people to own guns.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa signed a letter Wednesday along with other city executives at the U.S. Conference of Mayors calling for tighter gun control laws.

In the letter, the Conference of Mayors calls for three specific actions:

  • Enact legislation to ban assault weapons and other high-capacity magazines being prepared by California Sen. Dianne Feinstein and others;
  • Strengthen the national background check system and eliminate loopholes in it; and
  • Strengthen the penalties for straw purchases of guns.

The letter comes less than a week after a . It goes on to say that Congress should increase funding for mental health care and establish a commission to look at violence in the country as a whole.

"We know that preventing gun violence – whether it is a mass shooting in a school or a murder on a street corner – will take much more than strengthening our gun laws," the letter says. "We need to reverse the culture of violence in our nation so that a violent act isn’t the first response to settling a difference or compensating for a wrong."

But gun control laws shouldn't wait for other improvements to happen first, the letter says.

In a similar call for action, the Mayors Against Illegal Guns called on the president to "make it harder for dangerous people to possess guns, and easier for police and prosecutors to crack down on them."

Among other proposals, the bipartisan group representing 750 mayors want to:

  • Require every gun buyer to pass a criminal background check.
  • Get high capacity rifles and ammunition magazines off our streets.
  • Make gun trafficking a federal crime.

"In the past few days, the American people came together in a national outpouring of grief and sympathy for the families of victims slain in the mass shooting in Newtown. We share in that grief. But our constituents are also outraged and looking for leadership from the White House. We look forward to working with you to find a solution to gun violence in our country." the mayors said.

If Villarwhatever, or any other of these millionaire socialist clowns had their way, we'd look just like Mexico. Strict gun laws work really well there. Has any LA resident here had to ever really call 911? Like there is a guy coming over the wall in the middle of the night trying to get in the window? I have. Would you like to know how long it took the cops to arrive? 40 minutes. Do you want to know how I made the guy go away? I pointed a gun at him. He was later arrested, and was a paroled rapist and burglar. My anti-gun parents and sister changed their tune on guns after that incident. This was in a Studio City neighborhood of million dollar homes. There are very few cops in LA, especially in the Valley. You're on your own. I hope all you meek little children scared of guns never have to really dial 911 some day.

but he is totally fine with illegals coming here who are sexual offenders and gang bangers... he wants background checks on law abiding citizens but none for illegals..gotta love the irony!!

How does one effective legislate against crazy?
Mr. jepg December 20, 2012 at 07:55 PM
everything in the letter is already in CA gun control law. making this just like anything else this clown does is meaningless.

Was this man armed? did you see him clearly breaking into the window?
Strom Ruger December 20, 2012 at 08:10 PM
LA already has ridiculous gun & ammo rules, we are not safer, people get killed all over by guns, the solution is 1) Background checks @ gun shows 2) Fixed 10 rd. mag. on any 'assault rifle'; 3) Really trace the guns, if its a strawman the law covers it, private parties are supposed to go thru a dealer (I did!) & take the weapons (CARS) away from unlicesned, uninsured illegals, how many do they kill, how much $$ do they cost. I live in Encinio, BIG5 cant get a ammo licenses, they had one @ Zelzah!! To stop us here in Encino from buying ammo, meanwhile the gangster drive to Lakewood, or mail order their bullets, sensible not idiotic knee jerk reactions are needed..........

Your English has me suspicious that you might be an uninsured illegal. It makes me sick how all these politicians want to posture to be seen as "doing something" when a tragedy strikes. You can't stop every tragedy. People that are determined to kill others will, one way or another. The best thing to do is to take care of the mentally ill. Why is nobody proposing laws about responsible parenting? The shooter's mother taught her mentally ill son how to shoot. Really? She also didn't keep the guns locked up or let him know where the key was? If she weren't dead she'd be brought up on trial for criminal negligence.

Gun applicants/owners should have to take a yearly mental health exam.

So a guy who climbed my wall, inside the gated perimeter of my property, looking really sketchy, at 12:30 am, trying to pry open a window, should get the benefit of the doubt? Maybe he was looking for a lost puppy? Does the fact that he was arrested, and was on parole for rape and burglary mean I should have introduced myself, talked to him nicely, instead of showing him the muzzle of my gun? He didn't even blink. He hardly even seemed scared, but he did leave. Evil exists people. Accept that, teach your children, prepare for it, arm yourself, then you are less likely to be a victim. Israel arms their teachers, they know schools are a soft target with tremendous psychological impact. Maybe once we stop denying that crazy, and evil, exist, and evil will wreak havoc no matter what laws are in place to prevent it (maybe they will use fertilizer, or airplanes) then as a nation we can work to prevent it. Or we can let our government take away our freedoms. Self defense is the most fundamental human right. All other rights extend from it. If you cannot defend yourself you are not truly free. Gun control is to the left what the war on drugs is to the right. Almost 100% of gun owners, and recreational drug users, are harmless. Government uses the less than 1% of bad seeds to make criminals of the 99.999% who do no wrong.

Until you actually read an application for a firearm ownership you should shut up. Truth is all the idiots like you who keep voting for Jerry Brown, Feinstein, and Boxer are the headcases who need your head examined. The same people you vote for are letting all kinds of violent criminals out of jail early because the state has no money. Meanwhile your very same heroes in Sacramento and LA city hall are cutting back Police and fire. Anybody who trusts their lives or those of their loved ones with a broke, dysfunctional police dept that is so broke they won't respond to property crimes is an idiot plain and simple. Don't project your self doubt and insecurities onto other people because you are too much of a coward to take the responsibility of keeping yourself and your family safe. Be a responsible adult already and stop expecting other people to do what you should be doing for yourself.

Well said man...some of these people WANT TO BE VICTIMS. And they expect people like us to be victims to ..our lives or the lives of the people we love don't mean sqaut to them. They just want to control us. Period.

The racism displayed here is a sight to behold.
ChickenBoyFan December 22, 2012 at 01:15 AM
There should be a yearly mental health exam for gun ownership.
Dallas4 December 22, 2012 at 04:33 PM
If you paid more taxes, you'd have more police to protect you. You can't have both.
Dallas4 December 22, 2012 at 07:38 PM
If you want better response time from the police, pay more taxes. It's not a constitutional right for civilians to own weapons designed to kill a large number of people quickly.
Richard January 23, 2013 at 06:01 AM
Maybe There should be a yearly mental health exam on dope heads that misuse prescription drugs, and by some of the comments out there some of them should be checked right now!!! Leave our second amendment rights alone. Don't be a fool all of your life !!!!!
