Fire Department Offers Tips to Stay Cool in the Hot Weather

Brentwood residents are being warned to take precautions in this excessive heat.

As the temperature in Brentwood soars to the upper 90s, residents are being asked by the Los Angeles Fire Department to take precautions, especially if they are elderly or active.

"We've had an uptick in medical calls," said LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey, who added that while he couldn't say whether all of the medical calls were due to the heat, it was certainly a factor. "Almost everyone is complaining about it."

Humphrey encouraged residents to check out the LAFD's heat tips Web page for ideas on how to manage the warm weather.

"Lots of people are not taking our advice," he said.

"People need to take caution," Humphrey said.

Hot weather tips include drinking lots of water, reducing activity and checking in on elderly relatives and neighbors. Those residents without air conditioning may want to consider spending the hottest part of the day at the Donald Bruce Kaufman branch library in Brentwood (11820 San Vicente Blvd.), which will be open until 5:30 today, or at shops or malls where there is air conditioning.
