A note from Senior Lead Officer Maria Gray:

From recent news and media, there has been an increased awareness in the number of thefts occurring at gas stations while people are getting gas.  Labeled as ‘sliders’, these suspects slide in alongside a victim’s car and quickly and quietly open the car doors and remove purses and other items left on vehicle seats while victim’s are distracted by watching their gas tabs climb and climb.

Don’t be mesmerized watching the dollar signs add up while ignoring your purse or laptop in your vehicle. Get in the habit of locking your car door every time you exit your vehicle. Even while gassing your car or stepping inside the mini mart for a moment to get a soft drink.

Also worth mentioning at this time (and is also a similar crime mode of theft) is the practice of some thieves who walk amongst cars bogged down in traffic.  They yank on the passenger door handles –often of lone females who have left their bags and purses on the passenger seats—and reach in to help themselves then quickly run away.

The victim is often shocked and stuck in traffic and the suspect is long gone before police can get there.  Lock your car doors while driving.

Lock your car doors always. And before getting back into your car after being away from it, make it a habit to glance in the back seat to ensure no one has joined you.

Feel free to call/email me should you have any questions or concerns. Thank you!
