A message from Senior Lead Officer Maria Gray:

While shopping, please be vigilant about keeping your purses, backpacks & wallets secure and not left unattended in shopping carts. We’ve had suspects come to our area specifically to target complacent shoppers in various markets and stores. It only takes a moment, or a slight distraction, for your wallet to be taken. Often times, shoppers don’t even realize it’s missing until check-out when they go to look for it—and by that time the suspect(s) are long gone. My trick is to keep my bag on my person rather than in the cart (and please don’t leave it in your car (LOCK IT, HIDE IT or LOSE IT!!). Also, be a good citizen and point out to distracted shoppers that they are leaving themselves vulnerable. Most people will be receptive to your care and concern (I know I was while I was posing as a distracted shopper during a recent task force! Good job ladies!!). And finally, take a moment to remind your loved ones-- in particular, elderly parents and friends.

If you see anything that you feel is suspicious, but not an emergency, go to www.alertcommunity.com. It allows citizens to document suspicious activity quickly, easily, and anonymously.
