STUDENT CINEMA CELEBRATED AT ARCHER FILM FESTIVAL By Abrielle Josephson

On May 10th, the students of The Archer School for Girls hosted a film festival that was nothing short of impressive. The event took place at The Harmony Gold Theatre, at the border of Hollywood and West Hollywood, which provided a well-structured environment. The path within the venue was very fluid; the red carpet smoothly merged into the reception area, making it quite easy to navigate. Two Archer seniors, Abrielle Josephson and Catherine Bergin, set the playful tone for the evening as they hosted the red carpet interviews in character, reprising their roles from their short film Winfrey, one of the short films accepted into the festival. Their unconventional personas as all girls’ school students added humor that was quite relevant to the festival’s female focus. <br/>The keynote speaker of the night was Vanessa Morrison, President of Fox Animation Studios. She shared insightful thoughts on being a woman in the film industry through a Question and Answer session moderated by the Head of School Elizabeth English. The session provided students with the opportunity to ask Ms. Morrison questions that personally interested them; her eloquent and sincere responses left no student with an inadequate answer. The selected 16 films from a submission pool of over 150 were placed in a deliberate sequence that kept the audience entertained, arranged in a way that varied the genres and kept the audience on their seats. Films from the following schools were represented: Santa Monica High, Van Nuys High School, Harvard-Westlake, Cleveland High School, Mira Costa as well as Archer. Based on the audience reactions, the film festival was quite the success. The students who organized the event should be proud of their accomplishments. The third annual film festival will be just as good, if not better.
