Brentwood Poll: Are You Baking Holiday Cookies This Year?

Statistics are all over the place when it comes to baking, so are you or aren't you?

One of the icons of the holiday season is moms and kids gathered together baking Christmas cookies. But a lot has changed since those (perhaps not so) halcyon days when we liked to think of our American culture as a Norman Rockwell painting.

The truth is, we're far more likely to acknowledge that not everyone celebrates Christmas than we were (as a culture) even 10 years ago. As for Mom baking cookies, well, since Mom snagged that vice presidency and the kids have at least nine different after-school activities, finding the time to bake has been increasingly difficult for most families.

The trouble is, there's no hard data on how many families still bake holiday cookies. Believe it or not, Mark Zuckerberg and the crew at Facebook are not counting how many times you post that you put a cookie sheet in the oven.

That being said, a 2010 poll conducted by Wilton (the cake decorating supply company), cookies are the most popular item to bake, with 82 percent of the respondents rating them highest, and 78 percent of respondents said that holidays are the most important reason why they bake.

Still, the Home Baking Association, (yes, there really is one), concedes that home baking took a nose dive beginning in the 1960s, and while several sources suggest pointed out that folks are cooking at home more since the economic downturn began, there's no real data that says home baking is as popular as it used to be.
