This order unleashed a firestorm of controversy and was quickly rescinded by Abraham Lincoln. Jonathan Sarna has just published When General Grant Expelled the Jews and will share an account of this little known episode, Grant's subsequent apology, his groundbreaking appointment of Jews to prominent positions in his administration, and his visit to the land of Israel.
