Reward Offered for Information on Mountain Lion's Death
The mountain lion was found dead last month in the Malibu area.
The state Department of Fish & Game and the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust are offering $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of a mountain lion in the Malibu area of the Santa Monica Mountains, the organizations announced Friday. The last remaining collared-male mountain lion in the Santa Monicas . Fish & Game says poachers killed him.
The 7-year-old mountain lion, known to National Park Service researchers as P-15, was collared with a GPS device so he could be observed by NPS biologists. His collar stopped sending signals in August.
"The specific cause of death is still under investigation by California Department of Fish & Game, and details of the body are not being released at this time," wrote NPS spokeswoman Lauren Newman in an email to Malibu Patch. "However, the mutilation of the carcass was definitely human-caused, rather than animal-caused."
