Metro to Offer Free Rides on Christmas Eve

Program is part of annual effort to help people avoid drinking and driving and will also be available New Year's Eve.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) will once again offer free rides on its buses and light rail trains starting 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve as part of its annual effort to prevent drinking and driving.

"We've been doing this for well over 15 years," said Metro spokesperson Rick Jager.

Although the idea is to keep people from drinking and driving, Jager said that you don't have to have been imbibing to use the service.

"It's free for everybody. You don't have to consume alcohol to use the free service," he said.

He did suggest, however, that people planning on being out and about on Christmas Eve plan ahead and use Metro to get to their parties so they don't have to chase down their cars on Christmas Day.

"You don't have to worry about parking, you don't have to worry about having one too many," he said.

He added that if patrons plan their trips ahead of time, it will make it a lot easier to get home afterwards.

While Metrolink trains are not included in the program, trains on the Gold, Blue and Green lines are, as are the two subway lines, the Red and Purple lines. Those lines generally stop running around 1 a.m., and free bus service only lasts until 2 a.m.
