Great Escape: 'Brew at the Zoo'

It's a beer festival with music and pub grub amid the animals at the L.A. Zoo.

They say a leopard doesn't change its spots, but the L.A. Zoo seems to be undergoing a change with the new influx of evening, adult-oriented events. The latest is the zoo's First Annual Beer Festival—"Brew at the Zoo."

Twenty California craft beer breweries will be represented at this special evening on Friday from 6-9 p.m. The event will feature viewing of zoo animals with an added twist of “21 and up” fun—so it's the perfect "Great Escape."

Guests receive a 5-ounce collectible glass upon arrival and 12 sampler tickets with which to hoist it during the three-hour tasting experience. Brewery participants include Bayhawk Ales, Belmont Brewing Co., Bootlegger's Brewery, Brouwerij West, the Bruery, Cismontane Brewing Co., Eagle Rock Brewery, El Segundo Brewing Co., Hangar 24 Craft Brewery, Indian Wells Brewing Co., Inland Empire Brewing Co., Left Coast Brewing Co., Noble Ale Works, So Cal Brewing Co., Stone Brewing Co. and Strand Brewing Co.

Also participating are Firestone Walker Brewing Co. and Karl Strauss Brewing Co. who took home multiple awards from the Los Angeles International Beer Competition in June. Hard-cider fans may enjoy samples from Crispin’ Cider Co. and Fox Barrel Cider.

And what does drinking go with? Pub grub, of course—which will be offered throughout the zoo.

“Brew at the Zoo” will also feature music by KROQ “Locals Only” with  five up-and-coming L.A.-based rock bands set to perform throughout the evening: Heartstop, the Steelwells, the Fling, Tijuana Panther and Upstream.

Mix up beer, food and music with a stroll through the zoo, including the newest exhibit, Elephants of Asia. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association.

Tickets are limited and should be purchased ahead of time at lazoo.org/brew/. General public presale tickets are $40. Designated-driver tickets are $25 and do not include a tasting glass or beer tickets with admission. All guests must be 21 or older to attend the event.
