Five Things You Need to Know: June 16

Beware the 405, visit with a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and last call to register for summer classes at the Barrington Recreation Center.

1. Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley will speak at the Skirball Cultural Center to discuss her riveting novel of marriage and family, Private Life. A Q&A session and book signing will follow the discussion. The event begins at 8 p.m. at the Skirball Center at 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd.

2. Open registration for the Barrington Recreation Center’s summer classes continues. Courses include tennis, arts and crafts and basketball. To view a list of available classes or learn how to register, go to the Recreation Center’s website.

3. Meet fellow stamp collectors at the Donald Bruce Kaufman- Brentwood Branch Library today at 3 p.m. The library is at 11820 San Vicente Blvd.

4.Metro announced the following closures related to the 405/ Sepulveda Pass Widening Project. All closures will take place daily through Sunday and are subject to change without notice. Check out Twitter for updates or changes.

  • Sepulveda Boulevard’s northbound No. 2 lane will be closed from Wilshire to Bronwood from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Sepulveda Boulevard will be reduced to one lane each direction at Sunset Boulevard from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for utility work.
  • Sepulveda Boulevard’s southbound No. 2 lane will be closed at Moraga from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for Verizon cable work.
  • Sunset Boulevard’s eastbound Nos. 1 and 2 lanes will be closed from Church Lane to Thurston from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for water line excavation.
  • Sepulveda Way will be fully closed from Sunset to Sepulveda boulevards from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to set beams.
  • The 405 Freeway’s northbound 5, 4 and 3 lanes will be closed at Sunset from midnight to 5 a.m. to install bridge diaphragms.
