Campfires and a Book Party

Roast marshmallows at Temescal Gateway Park or celebrate the publication of Gregg Hurwitz's latest novel.

1. Enjoy a roaring campfire and marshmallows at Temescal Gateway Park. Every Thursday from now until Aug. 25, a campfire will be held at the park's Stone Amphitheatre. The park is at 15601 W. Sunset. The marshmallows are included in this free event.

2. Acclaimed, internationally best-selling author Gregg Hurwitz celebrates the publication of his latest book, You're Next, at Diesel Bookstore at 7 p.m. You're Next tells the story of a boy, Mike, raised in foster care after being abandoned in a playground at age 4. Diesel is in the Brentwood Country Mart at 225 26th St.

3. The Skirball Cultural Center has brought back its popular Summer Drop-In Art Studio. The program features a rotating menu of inspiring projects that focus on exploring, re-imagining and enhancing the world around us. Drop in any time during regular museum hours. The last entry is at 4:30 p.m. Museum hours are 12-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The museum is closed Mondays. The program is free with museum admission. General admission is $10, while seniors and full-time students pay $7. Admission for children ages 2-12 is $5 and children under the age of 2 are free. The Skirball Cultural Center is at 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd.

4. Construction of a retaining wall along the southbound 405 freeway near the Mulholland Bridge is under way. Workers will also widen the freeway slightly to the west to accommodate the new wall as part of the 405 Freeway-Sepulveda Pass Widening Project. Thus, the southbound Skirball off-ramp will be closed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m and 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. The closures will last approximately six weeks.
