Start Off the New Year at These Brunch Spots

These six Brentwood eateries will kick off 2011 with such delicious items as foamy heart-topped lattes, organic porridge and crispy waffles.

New Year's Day is almost anti-climactic. We've already done the holiday stuff: exchanging presents on Hanukkah, decorating our houses with Christmas lights and sipping champagne on New Year's Eve.

If you still find yourself wrapped up in holiday spirit come Jan. 1, we've rounded up six great brunch spots worthy of breaking resolutions; from low-key cafes to bustling gourmet restaurants, there is something for everyone.

1. Coral Tree Cafe: Open New Year's Day, Coral Tree Cafe serves breakfast from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. You can choose from signature tea drinks, lattes with hearts drawn in foam, lox plates and eggs bruschetta. There are also super-sized red velvet cupcakes and popular pastries showcased in the deli counter.

2. A Votre Sante: Eggs and healthy omelets are plentiful at neighborhood cafe, where you can opt for vegan dishes such as organic porridge and wheat-free pancakes. Served until 3 p.m., amid a list of protein-packed breakfast items, the "trainer's feast" features six egg whites, brown rice, veggie sausage and fruit.

3. The Larder: , a cafe connecting to Tavern restaurant's dining room, offers unique brunches: lemon ricotta pancakes topped with blueberry compote; smoked fish served with toasted rye and redwood hill goat cheese; and soft-scrambled eggs rich with fontina and crème fraîche. There's summer squash and tomato frittata with basil and chevre, chorizo and eggs with sofrito and fried potatoes, and brisket hash with fried eggs and horseradish cream. It's brunch fit for a king or queen.

4. Le Pain Quotidien: With locations all over the world, (that's "daily bread" in French)  remains popular for its freshly baked artisan breads, tabletop jams and spreads, and hearty breakfast foods. Steel-cut oatmeal is a draw, as is the ham and gruyere croissant, homemade granola parfait and seasonal holiday treats (think pumpkin pie with whole wheat crust and pecan tarts).

5. Literati: Connected to Literati Bar & Grill, Literati Cafe is frequented by writers, entertainment industry folk and coffee-loving patrons popping in for organic coffee and loose-leaf teas. Other beverages at the family-owned cafe, such as mint lemonade and fruit juices, are handmade and freshly squeezed. In addition to a selection of sandwiches, there are vegetarian and gluten free entrees and desserts. Breakfast burritos are made with farm fresh eggs, and chocolate chip pancakes are dusted with cocoa powder.

Literati: 12081 Wilshire Blvd., L.A., CA 90025; 310-231-7484.

6. Early World Restaurant: A casual neighborhood cafe, specializes in waffles, which come crispy and steaming from the kitchen. All breakfast items, from about $10-$13, are made fresh, not from frozen, and include omelets, pancakes and French toast. After 11 a.m., the menu opens up to french fries, burgers, sandwiches and Greek-Mediterranean lunch specials.
