Oscar (Nathaniel Brown), a small-time drug dealer, and his sister Linda (Paz de la Huerta), a nightclub stripper, are recent arrivals in Tokyo. One night, Oscar is caught up in a police bust and shot. As he lies dying, his spirit, faithful to the promise he made his sister—that he would never abandon her—refuses to abandon the world of the living. It wanders through the city, his visions growing evermore distorted and nightmarish. Writer/director Gaspar Noé(Irreversible) shoots the film from Oscar’s point of view, so when Oscar takes a psychedelic drug, we see the hallucinations he is having (note: the film contains strobe-like effects). Cinematographer Benoît Debie (The Runaways)allows the viewer to experience Tokyo’s underworld in a most unique way, sometimes floating above the city and watching the story unfurl below. In one extended sequence Oscar takes a trip through the Love Hotel, a dreamlike sexual labyrinth with characters acting out their favorite fantasies. Though destined to draw divided opinions, Enter the Void is a bold and incomparable cinematic experience.
