Weekend Planner: What's on in Brentwood

A Great American Backyard Campout, a grand cycling event, a hike at Topanga State Park and a film series at the Getty Museum.

The first weekend of summer will be a busy one in Brentwood. Join thousands of families and camp with your kids in the backyard while raising awareness about issues plaguing wildlife. You can also ride with the best in Los Angeles' first-ever Gran Fondo cycling event. Or hike Topanga State Park or catch a film series at the Getty Museum. It's all in your backyard.

Great American Backyard Campout

Where/When: Your backyard: Saturday night through Sunday morning.

Why Go: Register for the National Wildlife Federations Great American Backyard Campout. Then set up the tent, sleeping bags and s'mores for some backyard campout fun with the kids. You'll be participating with families all across America. The event seeks to raise awareness about important issues related to wildlife.

Price: Free, but donations to the National Wildlife Federation are appreciated.

Gran Fondo Cycling Event

Where/When: The Expo is at 9900 Wilshire, the Robinson’s May Parking facility behind the Beverly Hilton Hotel: 8 a.m.-6 p.m on Saturday. The ride starts on the 400 block of Rodeo Drive at the intersection with Little Santa Monica Boulevard: 7 a.m. on Sunday. 

Why Go: Gran Fondo USA has finally expanded to the legendary sun-drenched cycling routes of Los Angeles. The 72-mile course starts on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, curves westward through Brentwood to the Pacific Ocean, and then up the epic climbs of the Santa Monica Mountain Range. You may also chose the 39-mile course. Both courses start on Rodeo Drive and end at the Beverly Hills Hilton.

The Gran Fondo Cycling Expo features the latest cycling gear, accessories and nutritional products, additional attractions and some Italian cuisine. 

Price: The Expo is free. Online registration for the ride is closed but you may register in person at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Expo. Prices start at $125 for individual riders.

Hike at Topanga State Park

Where/When: Topanga State Park at 20829 Topanga : 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Why Go: Take a hike and learn how wildlife prepare for summer. The hike is gentle and for all ages.

Price: Free


Film Series:
Vive la Magnifique!

Where/When: , 1200 Getty Center Dr. Museum Galleries: 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. on  Sunday.

Why Go View the opulence of 18th century Paris through four films which particularly represent the era's costume and and finery. Films include Jefferson in Paris, Danton, Dangerous Liaisons and Ridicule. The films complement the museum's exhibition Paris: Life and Luxury. You may enjoy a wine and cheese tasting with your film.

Price: Free, but reservations are required. For reservations, all (310) 440-7300 or visit the Getty Center's Web site. Wine and cheese tasting is $25 per guest.
