Brentwood Brownie Troop's Clean-up Effort Thrown Away by Local Man

Plot of land next Barrington Station Post Office has been laid claim by local gardener while Brownie troop's efforts to clean it up are tarnished.

Two groups who intend to take care of small plot of land on federal jurisdiction next to the Barrington Station Post Office in Brentwood Village have come to a crossroads, the community council learned Tuesday night.

Now, public safety officials are looking into it.

An effort made by Kenter Canyon Elementary Brownie Troop 12755 to refurbish the entryway to the post office on May 19 was removed shortly thereafter.

A local man named Alfred Pirovits had been tending to his "garden" for several months prior to Brownie Troop's involvement, as observed by Patch on Feb. 12, leaving comments in the post speaking to his own unique environmental efforts.

The Brownie Troop, who were recognized for their community service efforts to build their garden Tuesday, June 4 by the Brentwood Community Council, held their heads high while receiving their merit badges by State Sen. Ted Lieu.

The troop sold more than 3,000 boxes of cookies to have a local arborist aid in the landscape project.

"I think this is one of life's hard lessons," said their scout leader. "I think you girls are resilient."

Los Angeles Police Department Senior Lead Officer Maria Gray admitted on Tuesday night she thought the "junk shrine" created by Pirovits, which extended along the Barrington Avenue trees, were part of a memorial

"There's a whole segment of the population who thinks it's whimsical and neat," she said. "There's a whole jurisdictional issue right there."

She noted the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were looking into the situation.

Brentwood residents have also voiced concern over squatters who have been occupying camp trailers for more than two years in the adjacent parking lot to the Barrington Recreation Center.
