News Van Goes Up in Flames on 405

Traffic was backed up for miles after a television news van caught fire on the 405 Freeway.

Story update at 3:35 p.m.

NBC4 News Management has released a statement regarding the news van from their station that caught fire earlier today. According to the statement, driver Joel Cooke, was returning to the station from an assignment in Newport Beach when the fire broke out. He was alone in the van at the time and escaped without harm.

"The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, and the station is grateful that no one was hurt in the incident," the statement reads.

According to the Los Angeles City Fire Department, a KNBC television news van caught fire on the northbound side of the 405 Freeway at Getty Center Drive. The fire was reported at 10:37 a.m. Friday, backing up traffic for miles, said the fire department.

LAFD Spokesman Matt Spence said he didn't know what set off the spark, but he said no one was hurt.

Spence said the fire was out by 11:03 a.m., but traffic was crawling on both the north and southbound sides of the 405 Freeway.
