'To Kill a Mockingbird' to Be Shown on Film's 50th Anniversary

There will be a screening April 11 in Beverly Hills.

A digitally restored copy of To Kill a Mockingbird will be shown at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills April 11 to mark its 50th anniversary.

The film will be introduced by talk show host Tavis Smiley and will also include an onstage discussion with Mary Badham, who received a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the daughter of attorney Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck).

Tickets are $5 and $3 for students and academy members and can be purchased online, in person at the Academy box office or by mail. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 7:30 p.m. The theater is located at 8949 Wilshire Blvd. More information on the screening is available here.

Peck received his only best actor Academy Award for his portrayal of Finch, a Depression-era Southern attorney struggling against a prejudiced system to exonerate a black man (Brock Peters) falsely accused of rape.

The film received eight Oscar nominations, including best picture. It also received Academy Awards for best adapted screenplay, written by Horton Foote, and best black-and-white art direction.

To Kill a Mockingbird was 25th on the American Film Institute's 2005 list of the greatest American movies of all time. The institute named Finch as the greatest movie hero of the 20th century in 2003.
