(Video) Brentwood Gets Its GROOV3 On

Fitness class GROOV3 combines cardiovascular exercise with DJ-spun hip-hop and R&B dance.

Facing his troop, Benjamin Allen waited as the last few stragglers set their belongings down and assembled in front of a large mirror in the studio in Brentwood.

"Alright, let's get this party started," Allen said, a signal to the DJ to start the music.

Wearing a plain red t-shirt, a cocked trucker hat, sagging grey sweats and a vibrant pair of blue and yellow Adidas, Allen circled around, clapping in rythym, and faced the mirror as a base-laden Jay-Z song blasted through speakers set up in the corners of the studio.

Allen started the dance movement he calls GROOV3 about two years ago in a now-defunct West Hollywood dance studio. Soon after losing the West Hollywood location, Allen took the fitness class to Brentwood, Agoura Hills, Torrance, Silver Lake, Hollywood and Culver City.

"I saw a need for a space that was open to anybody and everybody—a community aspect that no matter if you danced once or you danced since you were two years old, you could come and kind of let loose," Allen told Patch.
